Murder by The Numbers

Of all the murders in US, 46.2% of the murders reported were from the South. Louisiana was the deadliest state to live in during 2018.


The murder rate in Louisiana came to 11.4 per 100,000, more than twice the national average.


The least dangerous state in 2018 was South Dakota, with a murder rate of 1.4.


An estimated 63% of murders in the U.S. were by firearm, including handguns, rifles, and shotguns. This number sums up to 10,265 murders by firearm.


Although the number of murder cases has declined in the past twenty years, when compared internationally the U.S. murder rate is high. In 2012, Germany’s murder rate was 0.8 per 100,000, compared to 4.7 in the United States.
